Hemorrhoids are one of the most common reasons people put off seeing a doctor. They are uncomfortable to talk about, and without insurance most people have no idea what treatment will cost. At DRP Surgery in Arlington, the cost is published up front.

  • In-office hemorrhoid banding: $350
  • Colonoscopy with hemorrhoid banding: $1,775
  • Hemorrhoidectomy (surgical removal): $3,700

Surgical prices are all-in flat rates covering the surgeon, facility, anesthesia and pathology. The initial consultation and evaluation is $200.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus. Internal hemorrhoids form inside the rectum and often cause painless bleeding. External hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus and can itch, ache or become painful, especially if a blood clot forms (a thrombosed hemorrhoid).

Common causes include straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation or diarrhea, sitting for long periods, heavy lifting, pregnancy and getting older.

Common symptoms

  • Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl
  • Itching or irritation around the anus
  • Pain or discomfort, especially when sitting
  • A lump or swelling near the anus
  • Tissue that bulges out during a bowel movement

Do not assume rectal bleeding is “just hemorrhoids.” Bleeding can also come from other conditions, including colon cancer. If you are bleeding, a proper exam matters, and depending on your age and history, Dr. P may recommend a colonoscopy.

Treatment options, from simplest to surgery

1. Home care

Mild hemorrhoids often improve with more fiber and water, not straining, sitz baths and over-the-counter creams. If symptoms keep coming back after a few weeks of this, it is time for an exam.

2. Rubber band ligation (banding), $350

For internal hemorrhoids that bleed or bulge, banding is a quick in-office procedure. A small rubber band is placed at the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply so it shrinks and falls off within about a week. No anesthesia and no surgery center are needed, and most people go back to normal activities the same day. Some patients need more than one session.

3. Banding during your colonoscopy, $1,775

If you are due for colon cancer screening anyway, Dr. P can band internal hemorrhoids during the same colonoscopy, so you handle both in one visit.

4. Hemorrhoidectomy, $3,700

For large, severe or recurring hemorrhoids, or external hemorrhoids that keep causing problems, surgical removal is the most definitive treatment. It is done as an outpatient procedure. Recovery takes longer than banding and there is real soreness for a couple of weeks, but the chance of the hemorrhoids coming back is lower.

Which one do you need?

That depends on the type, size and grade of your hemorrhoids, which Dr. P determines at your $200 consultation. You will know the treatment and the exact price before anything is scheduled.
