Gallbladder surgery is one of the most common operations in the country, and one of the most confusing to price without insurance. At DRP Surgery in Arlington, laparoscopic gallbladder removal is $5,850 all-in for cash and self-pay patients. That covers the surgeon, the surgery facility, anesthesia and pathology.

When does the gallbladder need to come out?

The gallbladder is a small organ under the liver that stores bile. Gallstones can block its outlet and cause pain, inflammation (cholecystitis) or infection. Once gallstones start causing repeated attacks, removing the gallbladder is the standard treatment. Most people live normally without it.

Common symptoms of gallbladder problems

  • Pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, often after fatty meals
  • Pain that spreads to the right shoulder or back
  • Nausea or vomiting with the pain
  • Bloating and indigestion that keep coming back

Get emergency care for severe abdominal pain that does not let up, fever with chills, or yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. These can be signs of an infected gallbladder or a blocked bile duct.

What laparoscopic gallbladder surgery involves

Dr. P removes the gallbladder laparoscopically, through a few small incisions using a camera and fine instruments. Compared with open surgery, this usually means less pain, smaller scars and a quicker recovery. Most patients go home the same day.

Many people return to light activity within a few days and to desk work in about a week. Dr. P will give you specific guidance on lifting and diet after surgery.

What the $5,850 includes

  • Surgeon fee for Dr. Rajesh S. Padmanabhan, MD, FACS, board-certified general surgeon
  • Outpatient surgery facility fee
  • Anesthesia
  • Pathology

The initial consultation and evaluation is $200. At that visit Dr. P reviews your symptoms and imaging, confirms whether surgery is the right step and confirms your price before you schedule.

Cash vs. insurance

If you are uninsured, a flat price lets you plan. If you have a high-deductible plan and have not met your deductible, compare what you would owe through insurance against $5,850. Gallbladder surgery billed through a hospital often comes as several separate bills, which makes the real total hard to know until afterward.

Other flat-rate procedures

DRP Surgery offers all-in cash pricing on 16 procedures, including inguinal hernia repair ($3,900), colonoscopy ($1,275), laparoscopic appendectomy ($5,700) and hemorrhoidectomy ($3,700).
